When we look at green living we are looking at living sustainably which includes recycling, saving water, electrical consumption, eco friendly clothing and much more. Many households over the years accumulate all kinds of items such as pots and pans, crockery and loads of other items which literally just get stacked away in the shed which could be put to use and when we talk about sustainable living we mean recycle, reuse and reduce.
The way in which one can firstly reduce the clutter of items not being used it to recycle them by either selling them or giving them to charity. These items that someone else either buys or receives means that there are fewer items that needs to be produced to meet consumer needs. For instance every household has accumulated pots and pans and cutlery which are usually stainless steel and in some instances aluminium which can be used for recycling.
Stainless steel contains valuable elements such as molybdenum, chromium and nickel which is mined and if one recycles these items it would mean less environmental damaged by mining operations as well as major energy savings. Stainless steel unlike other materials is being recycled and not disposed of in landfills according to the International Stainless Steel forum and this is due to stainless steel being extremely durable and the forum has stated that around 90% of stainless steel is recycled annually.
If every household participated in green living and collected all their stainless steel items as well as other steel items that are no longer used and took them in to a recycling plant this would mean that products made from a hundred percent recycled stainless steel would be a viable resource as the only limit then would be the availability of scrap metal. Most of the stainless steel we purchase today is around 60% recycled materials.
Recycling depots usually pay one for unused items of stainless steel, copper and aluminium and you get paid by weight which is around $1.50 or more a pound/kilo. In addition not only stainless steel is sought after by the recycling plants but other valuable items such as glass, paper, cardboard, plastic cartons and tin cans can be gathered and taken to any recycling plant. By recycling these various materials we not only save energy but also prevent more landfills.
While you cleaning out all you unwanted clutter you will probably find items that can be revamped and can be used as unusual flower pots or can be used as a gift. There is a host of ideas that one can come up with and all that is needed behind these ideas is some initiative and creativity. Green living is a way of life and not a fashion as we are all trying to prevent further damage to the planet and recycling as well as reusing items that are just lying around is most effective which in turn will lower production costs. Involve your neighbours and friends and start an eco friendly club or share your ideas on the internet forums.
