Question by Ara: Can solar power really be cost effective in the near future?
In the next year or two, Will consumers choose to power their homes with solar energy based on saving money alone?Best answer:
Answer by Raymond Ricky
no way. solar energy is way too unreliable considering that 8 hours of the day is in darkness and the energy has to be stored in battery banks. solar and wind can be used in conjunction with utilities nicely though. the power company winds up buying the energy your solar panels or wind turbine produce and passes the savings of what it used onto you, cutting your bill tremendously.Know better? How many solar powered homes are in america and whats should we be seeing in the near future for solar houses?

How many solar powered homes are in america and whats should we be seeing in the near future for solar houses?Best answer:
Answer by Richard R
Until the cost of solar energy drops to the point where it is economically viable to choose it over power from the grid, solar power will remain unusual. The problem is that for solar power, you need to committ large amounts of money during the building phase. Tens of thousands of additional dollars, and space for expensive batteries that have a limited lifetime. What is truly needed is advances in battery technology. Unfortunately chemistry is fairly well understood, and there don’t seem to be any useful candidates for really efficient and cheap batteries. As for numbers, the definition of solar is vague: there are active, passibe, and combination systems. And the degree to which house can supply power also varies quite a bit.

Just having fun speculating and such, how much better would the environment get if the world drove electric cars.. would we physically see a noticeable change?…. I mean, this is obviously not possible in the near future, the whole word driving and being comfortable with electric cars won’t be reached at least for another 50-100 years, but just to satisfy my curiosity.. how much will this benefit our planet?

Given enough time, the world could potentially return to it’s EDEN-state.

I want to help the Earth for the people of the future but how would I go about doing that?
I recycle, I reuse and I reduce but what else can I do? I don’t feel like I’m contributing enough. I don’t want to be known as the douche bag who never did anything for the Earth. Yes, I realize I’m on a computer. Yes, I do feel stupid right now. But it’s for the Earth.
Tell me, fellow YahooAnswerians, what can a 16 year old do to help the environment?
Thank you!

He said: “If we are truly concerned about the environment, we must think not only for this generation, but for future generations as well.”
Best reply by fraggle_uk_uk:
Sensible advice. I’m an atheist but religious figures can sometimes say things that I very much agree with.
Another way that I’ve heard this said: “we don’t inherit the Earth from our parents, we borrow it from our children”.
