Question by Beckie100: why does only ethanol made by fermentation count as a biofuel?


i just wondered because i read somewhere that other ways of making ethanol don’t count as a biofuel but it didn’t say why, does anyone know?

Because it uses (yeast) to convert glucose into ethanol since both yeast and the plants producing glucose are alive it should be called a biofuel. Instead synthesizing it through the use of chemicals should not be called biofuel.

I’ve heard so many sides of the story and I can witness it first hand that Global warming is real. But there is a huge debate in the scientific community on whether it’s a man made phenomenon or it’s just the planet going through another phase before another ice age.

So people, what do y’all think?

Yes, the planet goes through natural cycles of warming and cooling.

No, the current warming trend is not natural. We know what causes the natural cycles, and the natural causes can be ruled out.

1. Ice ages, and inter-glacial periods, are triggered by small changes in Earth’s orbit called Milankovitch cycles, which lead to what climatologists call “orbital forcing” of the climate. Since Earth’s orbit can be computed for thousands of years into the past and future, we know that orbital forcing peaked 6000 years ago, during the so-called Holocene Maximum, and has been slowly cooling the planet since that time.

2. If the Sun is causing the current warmth, then we’re getting more energy, and the whole atmosphere should be getting warmer. If it’s greenhouse, then we’re getting the same amount of energy, but it’s being distributed differently: more heat is trapped at the surface, and less heat is escaping to the stratosphere. So if it’s the Sun, the stratosphere should be warming, but if it’s greenhouse, the stratosphere should be cooling.

In fact, the stratosphere has been on a long-term cooling trend ever since we’ve been keeping radiosonde balloon records in the 1950′s. Here’s the data:

3. If it’s the Sun, we’re getting more energy during the day, and daytime temperatures should be rising fastest. But if it’s greenhouse, we’re losing less heat at night, and nighttime temperatures should be rising fastest.

In fact, minimum nighttime temps have risen about twice as fast as maximum daytime temps during the last 100 years. Here’s the data:

6. CO2 levels in the air were stable for 10,000 years prior to the industrial revolution, at about 280 parts per million by volume (ppmv). Since 1800, CO2 levels have risen 38%, to 385 ppmv, with no end in sight. Here’s the data:

7. We know that the excess CO2 in the air is caused by burning of fossil fuels, for three reasons. First, because the sharp rise in atmospheric CO2 started exactly when humans began burning coal in large quantities (see the graph linked above); second, because the atmosphere’s gain in CO2 is mirrored by an identical decline in atmospheric O2, as would be expected from carbon burning; and third, because when we do isotopic analysis of the CO2 we find increasing amounts of “old” carbon combined with “young” oxygen. What do you think the two most significant contributions that mankind is making to climate change and why?

Contribution number one:

The industrial revolution – coal burning factories/trains/steamengines, more jobs, more money, more babies, more economy, higher standard of living = more burning of coal = more CO2 emmissions = artificial global warming.

Contribution number two:

Henry Ford – A genius. He invented the assembly line for automobiles. Better transportation = more burning of oil= better economy, more jobs, more babies, higher standard of living = more burning of oil.

Dont worry fossil fuels will run out soon and we’ll all starve to death because our farming systems rely heavily on fossil fuels; it kinda like mother nature’s way of saying fuck you. Oh wait we are a part of mother nature, I guess she made a mistake:(

Remembering that the word hoax implies a deliberate falsehood — Where and when did the “global warming hoax” begin? Did the world’s climatologists, environmental scientists, environmental activists, liberal politicians, and other proponents of the man made global warming argument meet in some backroom somewhere and plan it all out?

Are these same scientists, politicians, and celebraties deliberatly surpressing research that counters man made global warming? Are the dozens of peer reviewed journals that publish global warming research in on this vast conspiracy?

How is the vast conspiracy maintained? Is such a hoax conspiracy likely?

Or is it more likely that dozens or hundreds of scientists with diverse backgrounds, working in various fields, came to similar conclusions?

science, the media, and politics on every continent for 160 years. Does that seem plausible?

One of the famous scientific hoaxes in the world, the so-called Piltdown Man, was exposed 40 year after its conception. The Piltdown Man hoax only involved a few people and was undone through advancements in anthropology. Do you honestly believe that global warming is a hoax that has been carried on for 4 times as long as Piltdown Man and would have involved hundreds, perhaps thousands of people?

Its not a hoax, but rather its just that scientist dont have enough information to predict what the global temperature has done and will do. If the earth is millions of years old how has it survived? I say the earth will take care of it self and continue to spin and support life regardless of us. Did you know that water is a more significant green house gas than CO2? There is more evaporated water in the atmosphere than any other gas! Have you ever been in a green house? Whats the first thing you notice? Its humid and sweaty and there is water running down the walls! The atmosphere is kinda like that! If global warming really is happening it is just a temporarry natural cycle of earth. Probly has somthing to do with the earths orbit around the sun and the solar systems orbit in the galaxy. Dont worry be happy enjoy the sun! Go get some nice shades some sun tan lotion and drive a convertible to the beach and get a tan!

I;m doing a project on corn ethanol, and algae keeps being mentioned as an alternative. So how do you go about producing a biofuel from algae?

Instead of corn and soybean oil, we can use yard and forest debris. I have been driving through the Oregon highways and found tree debris as well as trees. We can allow cut down the trees and have them (or the Oregon State nonviolent prision population) clean up the debris so that the company can produce biofuel. Grass can be included. Why pay $ 116 per barrel of oil and increase our food prices because corn and soybean being diverted to make biofuel where we can use plant debris.
