Question by apple1tart: Idea for my school project on alternative energy?
I need to come up with a plan using alternative energy to reduce the emission of CO2, NO and SO2. Anyone have any ideas? Solar, geothermal, biomass, and wind are some ideas…. Thanks!Best answer:
Answer by lisetrise
I would lean toward solar energy, because there are so many uses for it.It’s clean and cheap (or free) and in some places, if you produce more solar power than you need, you can sell the excess back to the power company!
Passive solar heating
Solar panels (photovoltaic) – “Active” solar heating
Solar Hot Water Heaters
Solar cookers
Solar lightingThe solar idea is already gaining popularity in 3rd world countries where people cannot access electricity the “standard” way.
Hope this helps!

Question by Rebecca: How to build a solar house for my science project?
We can use a cardboard box, plastic wrap, aluminum foil, etc. Ways to collect as many solar rays as possible. Nothing too fancy or expensive, either! Goal: highest single temperature and highest average temperature. It’s going to be like a competition between the whole class. Please help!Best answer:
Answer by Plainer
Find materials that *collect* light instead of reflect it. That means use black colored items. The aluminum foil could come in handy to somehow try to reflect the rays onto the house…What do you think? Answer below!

VIMS scientists, part of the Chesapeake Algae Project (ChAP), were conducting basic research that promises to clean agricultural and other pollutants from the Chesapeake—and potentially the oceans—while delivering a carbon-based, sustainable stock that can meet the automotive fuel needs of an increasingly mobile world population. www.wm.edu

Question by George N: What is a good science fair project for environmental engineering?
Science fair projects are meant to solve problems, not to show how something works. I’d like to do a science fair project in the category of engineering using my LEGO Mindstorms robotics kit. The judges at the science fair especially like environmental projects, so I want to do an environmental engineering project. An example would be “What alternative energy source is the most efficient: water, wind, or geothermal?” Something like that would be good. If you have any ideas, I would greatly appreciate to see them.Best answer:

Put a solar panel on the robot. Use the controller for the robot to make it move around using the suns energy. Say this should be the use of energy for cars, making them run by electricity. If they ask about nighttime, give the example of a glow-in-the-dark magnet. It gathers the energy it needs during the day. uses it at night. Also use the example about the terrible oil spill in the gulf of mexico thats going on right now. Say that would be abolished if we were to use an alternative energy source for our cars and machines, aka the suns energy.Don’t know much about enviormental engineering, but I think this falls into that catagory. Not very original but good examples for it are here. What do you think? Answer below!

Time-lapse construction video of solar carport shelters construction at the Google Campus. Blue Oak Energy designed a 1.9 MW solar electric project for Google’s Headquarters in Mountain View, California. This extensive and architecturally complex campus required a forward thinking design solution, including both rooftop and carport PV arrays. Blue Oak acted as the projet architect and overall engineering designer and worked closely with Google and the City of Mountain View to address all site planning and design issues. www.blueoakenergy.com
