Question by apple1tart: Idea for my school project on alternative energy?
I need to come up with a plan using alternative energy to reduce the emission of CO2, NO and SO2. Anyone have any ideas? Solar, geothermal, biomass, and wind are some ideas…. Thanks!Best answer:
Answer by lisetrise
I would lean toward solar energy, because there are so many uses for it.It’s clean and cheap (or free) and in some places, if you produce more solar power than you need, you can sell the excess back to the power company!
Passive solar heating
Solar panels (photovoltaic) – “Active” solar heating
Solar Hot Water Heaters
Solar cookers
Solar lightingThe solar idea is already gaining popularity in 3rd world countries where people cannot access electricity the “standard” way.
Hope this helps!

Q&A: Where should I go to school for environmental engineering in Virginia?
Filed under Million Green IdeasApr 9Question by Media Helix: Where should I go to school for environmental engineering in Virginia?
I’ve recently decided that I want to change my career. I’ve been doing research on engineering and though I still have more research to do, I think I want to do environmental engineering. However, it seems there are no schools in VA that offer Environmental engineering on the bachelors level. GMU has a civil engineering program that has a specialization in environmental engineering. How would that differ from an official environmental degree?Best answer:
Answer by Sydney P
If you’re asking for a good school in Virginia for Civil/Environmental Engineering (CEE), VT was ranked #10 in the nation for their department. So that should answer your initial question.More specifically, I’m beginning my senior year in CEE and I’m going ideally concentrate in Structural Engineering. There are 8 different concentrations from the major, but my Bachelor’s degrees will be in Civil Engineering. I’m sure it’s the same in several places you go – the CE degree would suffice as education for an Environmental career. To sum it up, if you end up going to the program at GMU, you will have a BS in Civil that wouldn’t be much different than an Environmental degree.

What education would i need to get a job in solar energy or wind energy after graduating high school?
Filed under Million Green IdeasMar 22Question by Bradley: What education would i need to get a job in solar energy or wind energy after graduating high school?
Im fresh out of high school and am not sure what education i should be seeking next. I have heard that renewable energy is a fast growing field and would like to know what education a good job in that field would require. By a good job i mean anything from installing solar panels or repairing wind turbines. Any help would be greatly appreciated.Best answer:
Answer by Ottawa Mike
I hope you don’t take this the wrong way but you should aim higher than installing or repairing anything. Those jobs are important but if you have a very good understanding of math and science you can do so much more. For example, we need solar energy to become less expensive and more efficient. That means we need advances in the science of solar panels themselves and the batteries that store the energy. So a chemist or a chemical engineer would be working to make more efficient and less expensive solar panels. An electrical engineer would be working on designing better batterys and power capture systems. Even someone like an astrophysicist would study the energy of the sun and work with the chemist to capture that energy in a more efficient manner.
I hope that helps you give some more ideas of what a good job might be and the education required to get it.

On January 13, 2011, The Atrium School welcomed an Environmental KARUTA Workshop. Atrium students connected with children’s visions of biodiversity from around the world as showcased in the United Nations’ Children’s Environmental Paintings exhibition — and explored their own ideas on the subject. KARUTA is a traditional Japanese card game. Players listen to the reading card (Yomifuda) and compete to grab the corresponding picture card (Torifuda) among those spread out on the floor. What are the characteristics of a positive school environment and what impact does it have on the development of middle school children? How can poverty, culture, and education alter the outcome of children?
Im actually just looking for opinions, I already know the obvious answers and have already done my research. Thanks!

Jenny,
These questions cannot be answered here. You need to do your own research, and write your own paper/thesis. In the process, you will find the people, educators that have gone before you.Read the original question here

How would the environment be better off if the drinking age was lifted?
Filed under More Green IdeasJul 8I just need a few dot points, it’s for a school assignment.
Best reply by Tommy:
Car accidents would go through the roof. Grown adults of legal age drink and drive and die in car accidents, what would happen if already immature kids were legally able to drink. (not to say they don’t already but at least the age limit scares some out of it, and keeps it limited)
