    Question by Thunderforce: will majoring in biomedical engineering still allow me to work on alternative energy technologies?

    I am a freshman undergraduate majoring in biomedical engineering. I’d like to know if i can stay in this major and still work on alternative energy technologies. I’m doing BME because i want to help people but i’d also like to be involved in green technology. I’m actually thinking of switching majors to either electrical or mechanical engineering. but i’d like some opinions from people to better help with my decision. Please leave me some good feedback and no wise remarks. thank you.

    It’s generally a mistake to take Biomedical Engineering at the undergrad level. There aren’t enough jobs at the Bachelor’s level, and many Biomed Engng grads have to take jobs for which they are not optimally suited.

    Better you take good basic Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering (or Engineering Physics) in undergrad, then do the Green/BioMed stuff in grad school.

    Question by Lindsey G: What will it take for Americans to realize that we need to work even harder to find alternative energy?

    It takes a war for oil, sending our troops to die for oil, gas prices skyrocketing, proposing to drill and destroy Alaska (one of the most beautiful places in the U.S. who’s ecosystem is already suffering from warming due to using gas), global warming and middle eastern powers and terrorists having something we need from them….all these things we do for oil. Isn’t it time we wake up? We need to work harder to find alternative energy!

    McCain and Palin will do it. Palin was doing it by herself up in Alaska. She knows that will change our foreign policy and economy more than anything our useless Congress could do.

    I need a little help in coming up with a couple of environmental risks, or factors per say, in each of these 3 categories.
    1. At home (or neighborhood)
    2. At school or the workplace

    The greatest risk is stupid teachers sending students into hysteria with these assignments that make no sense. Take math.. forget the social studies.

    Question by ginger_jj: How many joules of solar energy fall on your back as you work on your tan for 0.70h?

    The intensity of electromagnetic waves from the sun is 1.4 kW/m^2 just above the earth’s atmosphere. Eighty percent of this reaches the surface at noon on a clear summer day.
    Suppose you model your back as a 27cm & 51cm rectangle.
    How many joules of solar energy fall on your back as you work on your tan for 0.70h?

    Best answer:

    Answer by WhatGoes Around Comes Around
    80% of 1.4 = 1.12 kW / m²

    Area = 0.27 * 0.51 = 0.138 m²

    Power = 1.12 * 0.138 = 0.154 kW

    Energy = Power * Time
    Time = 0.7 * 3600 = 2520 seconds

    Energy = 0.154 * 2520 = 389 Joules
