Question by Jason Mraz: How do you make solar panels work better?


Well, we’re having a solar car competition tomorrow at school, and since my car’s motor and belt drive don’t work too well, I need a way to make the car go faster. Since I can’t have any other source of energy other than the solar panel, is there any way I could make it better? Like with stuff you’d have around the house? Or possible improvements on the car itself?

Add some small mirrors around the cell to direct more light on it. If the weight of the mirrors is too much, try foil paper, or using a couple large mirrors held by yourself and classmates, directed at your car.

Question by Matt: How does global warming actually work?


As debates about whether or not global warming is actually happening I figure this is the best time to actually figure what global warming is and hopefully get some of my questions answered. I already know by the term alone that global warming is the earth warming. I guess my main question is about the CO2 gas. Does the CO2 gas trap the heat so it can’t escape the earth’s atmosphere and that is how the earth is warming? If this is happening wouldn’t the CO2 make it so the sun’s heat doesn’t get past the atmosphere in the first place making the earth not heat?

Well global warming as we know it,is the co2 gases from cars,nuclear plants,etc. rise to the atmosphere and cannot escape the ozone layer. Therefor it “rubs” against the co2 and causes the ozone to become weak over time,hence a hole in the ozone layer. I hate global warming myself,the mear thought that we could have a global disaster is scary,I hope people realize what they are doing to the Earth,cause there would be no cars,or nuclear plants,etc.,if it wasn’t for the Earth,hope I helped.

the topic is Alternative Energy.

So I need to know how alternative energy sources work. that is the question i have the most problems on… if you wouldn’t mind I would appreciate a sentence or two on these two questions about alternative energy sources.

Alternative energy is about renewable energy. Energy sources such as solar thermal, wind, geothermal, tidal, and hydro-electric can be reused. Once set up there is lower running costs. Most of these sources are converted to electricity for distribution and use. These systems convert mechanical energy into electrical energy.

Compare this with raw materials costs like, coal, gas and nuclear including above average inflation prices increases.

If we focused the sun’s energy like a magnifying glass does into the solar panels, would this generate more power at all?

Not really.
It would reduce the size of the needed solar panel to generate a given amount of energy, but you cannot increase the total power we receive from the sun.

Question by vector4tfc: Can solar car chargers work without having the key to the car turned to accessory?


I am thinking of installing a solar trickle charger in my car. Most of them have a cigarette lighter plug-in for easy installation.

But I am not sure they will actually charge the battery. I cannot get power to the cigarette lighter plug-ins without having the key turned to “accessory”. If I were to plug in a solar charger, I am afraid that it would not work, simply because no complete circuit to the battery exists while the key is not in the ignition.

There are chargers that connect to the battery using alligator clips. But these mean running a separate line to the battery. Is there a solution to this seemingly simple problem?

If your cigarette lighter works when the key if off, then yes, the solar charger will work. That will confirm you have popwer to the lighter when the key is off, thus the necessary connection to the battery.
