What can I do to help the environment?
Filed under More Green IdeasJul 15I want to help the Earth for the people of the future but how would I go about doing that?
I recycle, I reuse and I reduce but what else can I do? I don’t feel like I’m contributing enough. I don’t want to be known as the douche bag who never did anything for the Earth. Yes, I realize I’m on a computer. Yes, I do feel stupid right now. But it’s for the Earth.
Tell me, fellow YahooAnswerians, what can a 16 year old do to help the environment?
Thank you!

Hi!!

You can:
1. Stop drinking bottled water. Use tap water in a reuseable water bottle
2. Encourage your school to have a paper, and bottle recycling along with a compost.
3. Try to garbage pickup at least 15 min per weekend. Sometimes you find really cool stuff, and money too!!
4. Be a role model for your family, friends, peers and the earth!
5. Remember this:
Respect all life
Take only what you need
And for the earth’s sake
Use all that you take
6. Use both sides of the paper
7. Go outside and connect with mother nature.
8. Buy vintage/secondhand/ and consignment clothing and items there
9. Show people you care
10. Share your thoughts and feelings about this to your class, friends, family, etc.Hope I helped!

I will give you simple ideas for enviroment that you probably heard before. Turn off the lights when you leave the room. Use energy saving ligh bulbs. Pull out the plug in computers and TVs you don’t use. But have you thought of having fundraisers, buy an acre of land in the most endangered rain forests ($50 an acre). Give you’re old laptops to new people. I love the Earth and I don’t think you’re stupid at all. You will make the world a better place, even though I have no clue who you are. Good luck!

Hi Maggie,
At first I thought u were my daughter, but ur too young. She , like you, wants to help the Earth. One of the best things you can do is to educate the people around you so that they can see what needs to be done and why. I know if you think about this long enough you will find something everyday people do every day to hurt the planet …
what is it in your neighborhood? Think of what needs to be done around you that can be done with the help of volunteers, have volunteer sign-ups at ur supermarket asking for donations of time or money… find donors who would be glad to contribute to your project and Go for it, girl You will make a difference

The biggest thing you can do to help the environment is to not have children. You then remove the entire carbon footprint that your children and children’s children would have.

Start here: http://www.earthday.net/?skip=1 There are lots of good resources out there, but be very wary of organizations that badger you for money or personal information!
Look for simple things you can do yourself- at 16 it can be hard to convince your whole family to green up. Things like taking shorter showers, never drinking bottled water, turning the screen off on your computer when you aren’t using it, and so on. Talk to your parents/teachers about community activities you can get involved with if you want to have a wider impact.
Don’t get discouraged if you feel like you aren’t making an impact- even little things add up. Good luck!
